All bouncy castles and inflatables used within the hire market must have an initial test and annual safety test by law. This is the case for inflatables hired for use in back gardens and also inflatables used in public places and at events.
Although the law and the hse cannot define exactly who can and cannot carryout safety tests the hse currently recognise only RPII qualified and ADIPS inspectors as being competent to carry out safety inspections, and support only PIPA and ADIPS recording systems. The safety test itself is made up of 42 items which are cross referenced with the European build standard Bs en 14960. The items cover everything from the security of the stitching and air pressure to the fall off heights and suitability of the anchorage system. Many of the items will have a physical measurement check for compliance and some are a visual inspection for wear and tear and suitability.
As with any trade there are specific tools required to test a bouncy castle or inflatable correctly. In this case the inspector will need: a tape measure, a suitable pressure gauge, a set of probes, an anchor pull tester, a scale, set of weights, a pat testing machine, and a copy of BS en14960. If your chosen inspector turns up without the tools listed it’s unlikely they will be able to carry out the inspection correctly and should be turned away and reported to their respective scheme provider (PIPA or ADIPS)
Jump ‘in Jacks has been a registered inspection body since 2005 and can be found listed on the register of play inspector’s international website. We can carry out safety inspections on inflatables and issue PIPA or in house safety certification. We prefer when possible to carry out bouncy castle safety testing at our base in Rowley Regis near Birmingham and Dudley because we have our own repairs facilities there so minor defects can be rectified straight away if need be. Alternatively we can come out and test onsite. There is a min order value of two tests if testing onsite, and we expect the client to have the inflatables set up ready to be tested on our arrival. Test prices listed do not include the cost of pipa tags or certificates which are currently priced at £6.00 each, and prices are based on standard bouncy castles up to 20x20ft. Some larger or more complexed inflatables such as assault courses may be more expensive. All standard test fees include a pat test on a blower for each inflatable. If testing onsite there is a mileage charge of £1.25 per mile charged one way and if an overnight stay is needed accommodation costs are also charged to the client. Currently Jump ‘in Jacks is not VAT registered so there is no VAT on top of prices quoted.
